Against Fitna

I decided to write this post in English, just because I want to get this message to be clear. I don’t usually write about political stuff, but this time I felt I had to, because it hurts me to see that Dutch flags are burned and people shout "Death to all the Dutch".

I’m proud to live in a multicultural country. I love the diversity in people and its openness to other cultures, believes and values. You can learn so much from other people, other views and opinions. It broadens your own view, even if you’re against the others opinion. The only thing you need for that is mutual respect. And I just know the vast majority of the Dutch people agree with this.

Like anywhere in the world, our country also has a group of extremists. These people like to think that everything that’s not like them is dangerous. I guess it’s the fear of change, that drives these people. Although it’s hard, I also try to respect those opinions. Because I do believe people having other opinions than mine, is a good thing. The problem of course is that this respect is not mutual. Extremists abuse our respect of others’ opinions to push their view to the limit.

After 9/11 the world focussed on islam. If they can destroy the WTC, they must be bad people. Wrong of course, but still enough reason for people to get scared. I believe that Geert Wilders saw this fear and decided to use that to get power. He started his own political party, called the Party for Freedom. It’s called that, because in his opinion, if all foreign people, especially the islamic people, leave our country and if we focus all of our money and effort to just our country, our country will flourish and we will be free. His opinion, not mine!

The movie Fitna is Wilders’ next attempt to create fear and get more power. And that’s my limit. He already didn’t get my respect to begin with. He’s a racist and tries to get power through hurting other people. He doesn’t have any good arguments to support his believes. He just wants us Dutch people to hate the islam and give him power. Sounds like hating the jews and give Hitler power, doesn’t it?

I understand that people get angry by all this anti-islam stuff. But please be angry at Wilders and his followers. Don’t blame all the Dutch People. He’s at fault for abusing our freedom of speech, and use it to spread fear and hate. Our other politicians are trying the best they can to stop this, but can only act within the borders of our laws. All Dutch television networks refused to broadcast the movie. The movies’ website is hosted in the USA, probably because no Dutch host wants to. Please remember that the vast majority of the Dutch people are against Wilders’ believes. Some even regard him as retarded, although that would be an insult to the retarded people.
